February
24, Love in the Time of War
Sunday, 3pm. A dramatic reading of real love letters
from “Dear Eva” a non-fiction play based on World War II letters from
ordinary men and women during an extraordinary time. The letters were saved by Eva Lee Brown
of Easley, SC and discovered more than 50 years later by her daughter,
Catherine Ladnier of Greenwich, CT.
She and Paul Janensch, a former newspaper editor who teaches
journalism at Quinnipiac University, selected, arranged and edited the
letters down to their essentials. As
Eva explains, some of the letters are to a loved one, some are about a
loved one, but all are real.
Reservations are suggested, please call (914) 631-4481. Light refreshments. $10 for Friends of Lyndhurst, $15 for guests.

March 4, From Towers to
Turrets: The Gothic Revival in England and America
Tuesday, 11am.
Lecture by Lorella Brocklesby,
professor at NYU, Parsons: The New School for Design and the New York
Botanical Garden. Gothic revival
reflected a fashion for the medieval style that was passionately followed
in 19th century England and America, and can be seen in sites as varied as
London’s Tower Bridge and breathtaking Lyndhurst. This lecture places the gothic revival
style into its historic context, and explores mansions and public buildings
that drew inspiration from England’s ancient cathedrals and castles.
March 17, The Bizarre, the
Beautiful and the Bemusing: What’s Not on View at Lyndhurst
Monday, 11am.
Lecture by Cathryn Anders, Lyndhurst’s
Assistant Director and Collections Manager will discuss some of the
interesting and puzzling items that are not on public exhibition on a
regular basis. While large art museums
are known to have many objects in storage to support changing exhibitions,
such is not usually the case for house museums. Lyndhurst is fortunate to
have a quantity of material that relates to the mansion and the three
families who lived here for 120 years. The connections can be direct or
obscure, the objects may be beautiful or mundane and they may provoke
wonder or bewilderment; a few have not been identified. The documentation,
or speculation, about these objects will feature glimpses into Lyndhurst’s
archive of family photos, letters and memorabilia.
March 31, Paintings of the
Late 19th Century
Monday,
11am. Lecture by Peter Trippi. Lyndhurst’s Art Gallery will be the
setting for Peter Trippi’s lecture comparing the paintings and patrons of
the Royal Academician J.W. Waterhouse (1849-1917) with the artworks and
patronage of his contemporaries, the Lyndhurst owners George Merritt and
Jay Gould. Waterhouse was widely known in Victorian England, yet only a
handful of his costly Pre-Raphaelite paintings were exhibited in the U.S.
and only one was acquired by a private American collector during his
lifetime. Peter Trippi, curator of a major Waterhouse museum retrospective,
will survey this artist’s Romantic and richly colored depictions of
Ophelia, Circe, the Lady of Shalott, and other literary heroines, and use
the 19th-century European paintings at Lyndhurst to show how
Waterhouse resembled and differed from their creators.
